What to Buy for Your New Puppy

So you’ve decided to adopt a new puppy and are really excited… until you start thinking of all the things you need!! Have no fear, KelleyDoodles is here! We are going to walk you through our favorite puppy essentials and why they are such important purchases. You’re welcome ;)

  1. Science Diet Puppy food! Probably the most important thing you will choose for your puppy; healthy dog food is imperative to your puppy’s growth and well being! We use one of the most highly ranked dog foods on the market today. Science diet is a “dry puppy food, formulated to support a healthy immune system and overall growth for puppies. It is healthy puppy food which provides DHA from fish oil for healthy brain & eye development, uses a balanced set of minerals to promote strong bones and strong teeth in young dogs, is made in the USA, and is #1 veterinarian recommended.” All of this information came directly from this link, which is also where you can buy your puppy food! https://tinyurl.com/3tm9w8ke It’s found at Tractor Supply and is by far one of the most expensive, celebrated brands of dog food available. We only feed our dogs and puppies the absolute best!

  2. A super big, comfy dog kennel. You need a kennel big enough to house your little cutie while you are kennel training and also to use at their adult stage! We advise you to kennel train your puppy until at least 1 year of age. One of our favorites is found at this link: https://tinyurl.com/yw7vatva but you can also find awesome dog kennels used on Facebook Marketplace! We have bought almost all of our dog kennels from Marketplace and find amazing deals that way! Search your local facebook ads to find your perfect fit.

  3. NylaBones and Bully Sticks! AKA magic indestructible sticks that allow you to not lose your mind when your puppy goes through the chewing stage of puppyhood. Save yourself a lot of trouble and buy bones that will actually last! We personally love NylaBones like this one: https://tinyurl.com/yckje4ee but we have also heard amazing things about “bully sticks.” We have friends that have told us their puppies are OBSESSED with bully sticks and it made them survive the teething puppy stage! We like these from Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/2p8n4xr7 but any bully sticks would be good, just make sure they are rawhide free! Bully sticks can also be bought with a holder that keeps the bone in place and makes it easy for puppies to grasp them. This bully stick holder is awesome! https://tinyurl.com/33an2eks Also, DO NOT, I repeat — do not — ever buy your puppy rawhide bones of any kind. These are absolutely dangerous and are not only choking hazards, but can also lead to intestinal blockages! Make sure you only use treats that are super sturdy and safe for your puppy; it’s worth it to do the extra research now and save yourself a ton of money in vet bills in the future!

  4. A blanket with littermate’s scent on it! This is a gift that we personally provide with every puppy we send home. Why? Because it’s a huge comfort to your little baby when leaving the nest! They need familiar scents when they go to their new homes. Even if you don’t get your puppy from us, make sure you get a custom blanket for your little dude or dudette!

  5. Puppy pads. Lots of puppy pads. We love these from Walmart: https://tinyurl.com/bdfbd53x because they are extra large and come scented with Febreze! We all know they will have accidents in the house when they are little. We like to get ahead of it and put these at every door of your home, to encourage them to at least go to the door to tell you they have to potty!

  6. Wood pellets for potty training! We have done a lot of work for you and have trained your puppy to use wood horse bedding pellets when they go potty. We utilize these same exact wood pellets from Tractor Supply on every litter we have: https://bit.ly/3KnOKsO We advise you to put these pellets in your yard where you want your puppy to go potty. Then, when they come home, show your puppy these pellets and take them to the pellet area every time they go outside. They will eventually start using this area to potty and it also helps teach them to “go” far out from your house. Soon, they will only want to go outside because they know that’s where their pellet potty area is! We send puppies home 75% potty trained with this method and it GREATLY helps you when training your adorable new addition!

  7. Ridiculously cute bows or bow ties. You will use these as you become borderline obsessed with showing off your pup to family or on outings to Tractor Supply, Lowes, or Home Depot! (Yes all these places allow dogs in their store! It’s an awesome way to socialize your dog, just wait until they’re fully vaccinated at 16 weeks!) I absolutely love this bow assortment for female puppies from Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/ywrbx8vz They are great for any sized puppy! These come in a variety of sizes and colors and are easy elastic bands you can knot two or three times to make little pom poms in their fur! It’s adorable! For male puppies, I love these bow ties! https://tinyurl.com/ycku5w5c They are perfect for any holiday or special occasion and come with adjustable sizes!

I hope this helps you when you set out on your puppy purchases! Happy shopping!
