IN THIS LESSON

Any fencing option is great for your new puppy! Some are simpler than others. Some fence types are harder to use simply because owners must teach puppies how to use them.

Above-ground, traditional fencing is a wonderful solution for the easiest training.

We have a large piece of land fenced on our property where pups can romp, play, rough house and have a blast. It’s roughly 6 feet tall and to this date, even our best escape artists haven’t broken out!

In-Ground Wire Fencing with a shock/buzz/beep collar is a great method that works for someone who will teach their puppy how to use it.

If I used this method, I would lead the pup along the line of underground fencing and show them their boundaries every day for 4-6 weeks. Walking along this boundary, the pup would be leashed, and given small treats as they followed me. They will quickly learn if they step out of bounds that there is no treat provided! And if collar is placed on puppy’s neck, they can receive a painless “buzz” to alert them that this is “bad.”

Above-ground, shock-wire barrier fencing:

(Linked to Amazon on Product Page.) This is a good method to utilize when blocking off a certain area from puppies to protect their safety, like a pool or bush bed area you don’t want your new pup getting into. It’s extremely simple, and they will learn in ONE TIME what it means to be “shocked” and not go near it again. You as the owner can leave the power on very low, which means the actual “shock” is surprising – NOT PAINFUL.
